Jessica Hubery selected in the Swim England North East Region Open Water Squad
Congratulations to our own distance goliath Jessica Hubery who has been selected to be part of the Swim England North East Region Open Water Squad for 2024.
The Open Water Regional Squad forms part of the Swim England National Swimming Talent Pathway and will provide an opportunity for swimmers to develop their technical, tactical and physical open water skills with swimmers of a similar age and ability from across the North East.
Now in it’s 2nd year, the new initiative has already seen success going on to win Gold at the National 5km last summer and the hope is to build on that success by delivery a successful preparatory camp ahead of the NW/NE Region Open Water Championships on 29th June 2024. The camp aims to be a positive and rewarding experience, with the intention of it being a stepping-stone to further stages of the pathway in the future.
Open Water swimming has been included as an event at the Olympic Games since Beijing 2008, where British athletes won 3 of the 6 medals awarded. Kerri-Anne Payne (double world 10Km champion and European SC 400m freestyle champion) and Cassie Patten (world 10Km silver medalist and 4th at World SC for 800m freestyle) won silver and bronze respectively in the Womens 10Km, and David Davies won silver in the Mens 10Km (won bronze in Athens 2004 in the 1500m). Since 2008, Great Britain have not had a podium finish at the Olympic Games - could the next medallist be you?!
Jessica will have the opportunity to train at Manvers Lake on Saturday 25th May 2024 where she will develop open water skills, listen and engage in tactical discussions, and then race a distance of either 2-3km.
Congratulations from everyone at Doncaster Dartes, Jessica! We’re immensely proud that you’re taking your first steps onto the Swim England Talent Pathway and can’t wait to see you in action.
