Squads Aims & Objectives

To compete at County and Regional level with good commitment to the programme. Swimmers will be targeting the County and Regional Championships. Swimmers should aim to reach the highest levels based on ability and commitment levels. Swimmers should have their sights on the ASA English Nationals as they progress.

Ages

Male 11 years to 13 years (10 years and 14 years considered)

Female 10 years to 12 years (13 years considered)

Accepted criteria for entry into squad

  • Two Consideration Times in the age groups specified at the NER Championships.
  • Proven ability and commitment to following a competitive training programme (swimmers, with parental support)
  • A positive mind set
  • 100% commitment to team events
  • Signed and returned copies of Swimmer Code of Conduct & Parents Code of Conduct
  • A team player – polite, supportive, caring and empathetic
  • Consistently attending 80-100% of available agreed sessions (Pool and Land)
  • Up to date licensed times (within the last 6 months) in the following events: every 50m and 100m event, 200m Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Individual Medley and the 400m Freestyle and Individual Medley every 6 months. All as a minimum.
  • To comfortably complete 100m butterfly with proper technique without the use of single arm strokes and the need for aids such as fins.
  • Para-Swimming: Para Athletes must have achieved 1 long course national consideration times for their classification, or have a special educational needs and have the ability to train with able bodied athletes. 
  • Full commitment to the DARTES Programme, and no longer swimming with feeder club (unless specifically agreed with Lead Coach).

Considered criteria for entry into squad

  • Two County Consideration Times in the age groups specified at the Spring or Winter Yorkshire Championships.
  • Swimmers assessed by the Lead Coach (and Head Coach if required) to have near term potential and or having longer term potential may be admitted or retained within a squad on a probationary period of between 3 – 12 months, at the coaching team’s sole discretion. The swimmer must be able to show commitment and demonstrable progress towards the overall squad criteria and show improvement (based on goal setting) at designated competitions and within training.

Swimming Training Basic Criteria

  • Ability to consistently demonstrate 4 fly kicks off all walls/turns in streamline under pressure
  • Have the ability to perform 2-stroke breakout during front crawl and butterfly starts and turns.
  • To be able to hold a 3-stroke breathing pattern in front crawl.
  • To consistently perform a good and proper pre and post-pool routine.
  • To be coachable, open and willing to try new things and new ways of thinking.
  • Understand the use of pace, stroke Count, stroke rate in relation to perceived effort in different training intensity
  • Adhere to good lane discipline and lane etiquette.
  • To have the ability to use the pace clock.
  • Commit to aerobic and endurance development.
  • Understand A1, A2, AT pacing and speed development training.
  • Possess the ability to perform legal crossover, and or flip turns during backstroke to breaststroke turns and Individual Medley races.
  • Attend land training and understand the importance of full commitment to land based activities.

Criteria for Squad Exit

  • Failure to comply with the Clubs Code of Conduct
  • Failure to live up to the Clubs Core Values
  • Unable to attain the relevant performance standard.
  • Consistently late to sessions (pool and land) without agreement
  • Consistently unable to maintain training commitment, as agreed with Head Coach.
  • Consistently unable to maintain competition commitment, as per fixtures list.
  • Showing no demonstrable progress towards achieving the required standards.
  • Training at other clubs or seeking additional coaching/technical sessions outside of the Lead Coaches Planning

The criteria emphasises process over outcome (choice over result). Training at the required level should produce performances well above the minimum level identified below – this is more of a guide to ensure athletes remain on track for the next level.

Finally there are a number of qualities we expect from those selected for this squad.

Qualities

Age: 11-14 (10 considered for strong female candidates.
Young 15 year olds may be given additional months if waiting for the next squad)

Remain positive and encouraging to team mates
Especially when tired
A growth mindset
Desire to improve technique/skills
Training should be a high priority over non-academic activity
