Squads Aims & Objectives

To compete at County, Regional & National level with total commitment to an individually agreed training program with the Lead Coach. Swimmers will be targeting the British Summer Championships, England Summer Meet and/or Regional level competitions and should be prepared to do “all that it takes” to reach the highest levels.

Ages

Male 13 to 18 years (12 considered for strong male candidates)

Female 12 to 18 years

Accepted criteria for entry into squad

  • To be ranked in the Top 48 in the age groups specified at the North East Regional Championships or English Nationals in multiple events, excluding 50’s for those 15/under
  • Proven ability and commitment to following a demanding training program (swimmers, with parental support)
  • A positive mind set, with the ability to take personal responsibility for performances
  • 100% commitment to team events
  • Signed and returned copies of Swimmer Code of Conduct & Parents Code of Conduct
  • A team player – polite, supportive, caring and empathetic
  • Consistently attending 90-100% of available agreed sessions (Pool and Land)
  • Para-Swimming: Para Athletes will be assessed on a case by case basis.
  • In short, pool and land attendance and training performance, competition commitment and performance, Rankings and work ethic are all taken into account.

Considered criteria for entry into squad

  • To have competed in a Regional Final (Summer or Winters)
  • If there is room in the squad, futher consideration will be given to those that have obtained 2 or more Regional Qualifying Times.
  • OR: Swimmers assessed by the Head Coach to have near term potential and or having longer term potential may be admitted or retained within a squad on a probationary period of between 3 – 12 months. The swimmer must be able to show commitment and demonstrable progress towards the overall squad criteria and show improvement (based on goal setting) at designated competitions and within training.
  • Short Course Rankings are taken into consideration.

Swimming Training Basic Criteria

  • Ability to consistently demonstrate 4 fly kicks off all walls/turns in streamline under pressure
  • Boys/Girls can hold 20x100 on 1:35 Free or Back short course
  • Boys & Girls can kick on their No1 Stroke 100m in under 1:55 Short Course
  • Has a sound “grasp” on training cycles and sessions; and are able to take full personally responsibility for their efforts in training sessions and is in line with the expectations of the Head Coach
  • Consistently hold required pace times for 100/200/400 Pace, 25m sprints, ICS pace, Critical Speed etc when asked
  • Friday and Monday sessions must be attended when competing in weekend competition, unless the Head Coach has granted permission.

The following “test set” performances offer a guide as to the minimum acceptable training ability within the squad. Athletes within National Squad are expected to progress significantly beyond the level shown. It’s intended to be a check on a Candidate’s training base, to ensure they are physically capable of managing the training load of the squad. The sets listed will be reviewed and adjusted each year.

Kick 10 x 100 @ 2:10 Holding 1:55 or quicker
Kick standard for 2 of 4 strokes Kick Gold Standard - 1:40 or faster
Expect criteria for kick times to fall in future years
Every Performance Swimmer should aim for 1:30 or faster!

Criteria for Squad Exit

  • Failure to comply with the Clubs Code of Conduct
  • Failure to live up to the Clubs Core Values
  • Unable to attain the relevant performance standard.
  • Consistently late to sessions (pool and land) without agreement
  • Consistently unable to maintain training commitment, as agreed with Head Coach.
  • Consistently unable to maintain competition commitment, as per fixtures list.
  • Showing no demonstrable progress towards achieving the required standards.
  • Training at other clubs or seeking additional coaching/technical sessions outside of the Lead Coaches Planning

Athletes should be qualifying and competing at:

  • Yorkshire Swimming Championships 
  • North East Regional Championships
  • British & English Championships
  • Level 1/2/3 Competitions

The criteria emphasises process over outcome (choice over result). Training at the required level should produce performances well above the minimum level identified below – this is more of a guide to ensure athletes remain on track for the next level. The minimum standard accepted is significantly different to the minimum ambition expected of those in the squad.

Finally there are a number of qualities we expect from those selected for this squad.
