National Go 4x400m Kick
The 4x400m kick test set was once reserved for our Age Groupers. No longer!
The old Phase 5 record stands proudly at 6:00 dead; but an average of 6:23, and a fastest rep of 6:15 set by Jessica Hubery now sets the standard for our young group of upcoming stars to strive for. Her own goal should be to chase down the 6:00 dead.
We've always said 6min was achievable on this set. Runner-up on Wednesday evening almost made it down to that mark too. Phoebe Weatherill saved her best till the last 2 attempts and set her fastest rep at 6:20 (and an average of 6:30). Both top two positions going to those electing to do 1600m of back or Fly kick!
Maybe a good rule of thumb should be that first years need to get below 9min, 2nd years get below 8mins, and 3rd years should be faster than 7min. Of course, if you arrive with a good strong kick already, by all means give yourself a head start! Those of you struggling with kick should always set a target for yourselves in training and keep chipping away at your times - it will improve quite dramatically.
Historically there was a trend indicating which kick was fastest. The records all seemed to be set with Fly. Those doing Backstroke kick would be a close second. Freestylers wouldn't be far behind, but Breaststrokers would generally be towards the rear. And so it proved with Kiera Binns claiming the third spot.
