The 2km Returns

Jordan Allerton

National Squad underwent the big 2000m test set for the first time (and fortunately the last time) this season, and personally what a joy it was to see a mix of fear and excitement as it was announced on poolside. There is nothing fancy about this set, it is all about determination and having the will to push through the pain barrier when your shoulders are screaming for you to stop. Leading the way was Greta Highfield, going out on a very brave 5:08 over the first 400m, following closely behind was Jessica Eggitt with a 5:13 with both girls doing an awesome sub 27 minute 2km swim. Can they repeat that feat when it matters?

Further mentions go to Kennedy Matthews, Lawrence Chapman and Jessica Hubery, all demonstrating the sheer guts and desire to finish strong with a late surge in the final 500m.

In years gone by we described that the target pace should be somewhere around 100m PB + 10 seconds. Optimistic for such a young group but this is the long term goal. The fitter and better conditioned the athlete, the closer that target time becomes. This of course depends on their 100m PB being up to date, showing a true reflection of what they're capable of.

For the new guys just coming in, your first attempt at this lung buster is just about finishing and setting a time – that’s it. After setting that benchmark, you’ll have something to beat next time. It also gives you a quick glance at what your A2/A3 pace should be for training; or how much faster you can afford to start an 800m or 1500m race next time.

Overall, an excellent mornings work, can you beat it next time?
